Announcement: Permanent closure of 1700 La Poste

After some time of reflection, Isabelle de Mévius, founder of the private art center on Notre-Dame Street West in Montreal, announces that she is ending its activities.

"After more than ten years of exhibitions and accomplishments, I am announcing today that the time has come for me to step back, reflect on the journey, and devote my energy to new projects. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the artists and the entire Quebec cultural community for their support of 1700 La Poste’s mission. Creating and nurturing this space has been both a privilege and a great joy. Now more than ever, I firmly believe that art remains a vital and invaluable force, essential to our society."

Opened in 2013 after four years of restorations inspired by the vision of Montreal architect Luc Laporte, the building at 1700 Notre-Dame Street West in Montreal—named 1700 La Poste in reference to the century-old building’s origins—has hosted no fewer than twenty exhibitions and showcased more than twenty-five artists.

Louis-Pierre Bougie, printmaker and painter, was the first artist to be featured in a major exhibition at 1700 La Poste. This exhibition quickly confirmed both the insightful vision of its founder and the outstanding work of her team.

In addition to its exhibitions, the art center also presented numerous music concerts and conferences, published around twenty monographs and catalogs, and produced about ten documentaries as well as multiple visual capsules to help visitors better understand the artists’ work.
