Louis-Pierre Bougie
In 2013, the 1700 La Poste is proud to inaugurate its new space with the first retrospective exhibition of painter and printmaker Louis-Pierre Bougie. The exhibition presents an overview of Bougie’s production with some 100 works on the gallery’s three floors.
At the heart of the survey is the artist’s characteristic line, visible in his sketchbooks—exhibited here for the first time—but also in his monotypes, drawings and paintings. Ink, white highlights, and charcoal punctuate the works, which have been carefully selected from several decades of production.
Louis-Pierre Bougie was born in Trois-Rivières (Québec) in 1946. A master engraver, painter and sculptor, he has had a career spanning more than 40 years. The artist began his studies by auditing classes at the legendary École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, and went on to train at a number of studios, notably in France, where he learned lithography at Atelier Champfleury and specialized in intaglio and etching at Lacourière et Frélaut. A founding member of the Montréal printmaking cooperative L’Atelier Circulaire, he continues to contribute to the development of printmaking in Québec by welcoming emerging and internationally established artists to the studio. The recipient of many prestigious awards, he has exhibited in some fifty solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His work is included in private and public collections in Canada and abroad.

This monography traces the Louis-Pierre Bougie's journey in a subtle and intimate way, through a philosophical essay by Michaël La Chance divided in five chapters, and prefaced by Georges Leroux. The book, generously illustrated by his artworks, offers the reader an authentic vision of the painter and engraver's approach, informed by themes of solitude, desire, tenderness and violence.
